As Nigerian universities grapple with lecturer shortages, growing enrolment and the need to improve learning outcomes, artificial intelligence is emerging as a potential tool to bridge the quality gap in higher education.
EdTech company FlexiSAF, in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), says its AI-powered learning platform is helping institutions automate course development, personalise learning and improve access to quality educational content.
The initiative marks a shift in FlexiSAF’s evolution from providing school management software to addressing broader challenges around teaching and learning.
Founded 14 years ago by Faiz Bashir to digitise school administration—including student enrolment, grading and record management—the company now serves about 120 tertiary institutions and 700 schools across Nigeria.
However, Bashir said the experience revealed that administrative efficiency alone could not solve the deeper challenge facing education.
“Administration was never the real obstacle. Delivering quality education was,” he said.
The challenge is particularly significant for Africa, where about 60 per cent of the population is under the age of 25 and tertiary education enrolment continues to expand rapidly.
According to industry estimates, Africa’s e-learning market is projected to grow from about $200 million to $20 billion by 2032, driven by increasing demand for digital education solutions and mounting pressure on institutions to expand teaching capacity.
To respond to that demand, FlexiSAF launched Distinction.app in April 2024 in collaboration with AWS.
The platform, built on AWS generative AI technologies, enables lecturers to generate complete course materials—including lecture notes, quizzes, flashcards and video content—from a single topic in just a few minutes.
It also provides automated grading, personalised learning pathways and real-time feedback for students.
According to the company, the platform is now used by 130,000 learners across 260 universities, generating more than 1.3 million AI-created assessment questions, processing over 7 million student responses and supporting more than 1.2 million hours of learning within its first year.
The company says affordability has been central to its adoption strategy.
Priced at about $2 per student per month, the platform is designed to remain accessible to African institutions while delivering recurring revenue through institutional subscriptions.
FlexiSAF said the pricing model has contributed to a customer retention rate of 96 per cent, and the company now aims to increase its share of Nigeria’s tertiary education technology market from about 10 per cent to 40 per cent by 2030.
Bashir credited AWS with helping the company scale rapidly despite operating with a workforce of about 100 employees.
“Our experience with AWS has been exceptional—not just from a technology standpoint, but from a true partnership perspective,” he said.
He noted that building AI infrastructure capable of supporting hundreds of thousands of learners across multiple countries would ordinarily require significantly larger engineering resources.
Commenting on the partnership, the General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at AWS, Jyoti Ball, said the collaboration demonstrated how cloud infrastructure could accelerate innovation.
“Building on AWS, FlexiSAF did it in months, not years. That’s what co-creation looks like when you remove the barriers and let builders build,” she said.
Looking ahead, FlexiSAF plans to deepen its AI capabilities with automated video generation, AI-powered quality assurance and more advanced personalisation features as it expands across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Beyond universities, the company has also deployed its technology in Nigeria’s public education sector, supporting large-scale education programmes including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, the National Examinations Council (NECO), and education projects in Kaduna and Bauchi states.
As governments and institutions seek cost-effective ways to improve educational quality, AI-driven learning platforms are increasingly being positioned as a practical complement to traditional classroom instruction rather than a replacement for teachers.
