United Bank for Africa (UBA) has announced the retirement of its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, after 12 years at the helm of the bank’s board, naming veteran banker and corporate executive Emmanuel Nnorom as his successor.

The leadership transition will take effect on August 21, subject to regulatory approvals, and is in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s corporate governance guidelines, which prescribe tenure limits for non-executive directors.

The appointment ushers in a new phase for one of Africa’s largest banking groups, with Nnorom bringing more than four decades of experience across banking, finance, auditing and corporate leadership.

Nnorom’s career has spanned senior executive roles in commercial banking, investment management and conglomerate leadership, making him one of the country’s most accomplished financial services executives.

He began his banking career in January 1996 when he joined Diamond Bank Plc as General Manager for Operations and Branch Businesses, overseeing branch operations until May 1998.

He subsequently held leadership positions at Equitorial Trust Bank, Liberty Merchant Bank and NUB International Bank before joining Standard Trust Bank as General Manager for Operations and Control in 2004.

Following the merger of Standard Trust Bank and UBA in 2005, Nnorom embarked on a rapid rise through the lender’s executive hierarchy.

Starting as General Manager for External Reporting, he was successively appointed Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director for Group Office, Executive Director for Finance and later Executive Director for Risk.

In January 2013, he became Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, where he supervised the bank’s operations across multiple African markets during a period of aggressive continental expansion.

His career later extended beyond banking into strategic investments.

In January 2014, Nnorom joined Heirs Holdings as President and Chief Operating Officer, overseeing investments across financial services, energy, healthcare, hospitality and infrastructure.

Later that year, he was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc (Transcorp), where he led the diversified conglomerate’s operations in power generation, hospitality, agribusiness and energy.

During his tenure, Transcorp expanded its strategic investments, including the Ughelli Power Plant, Transcorp Hotels and Teragro Commodities, while strengthening its position as one of Nigeria’s largest listed companies with approximately 300,000 shareholders.

A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and an honorary member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Nnorom is expected to bring extensive boardroom and operational experience to his new role as chairman.

His appointment comes at a time when UBA continues to deepen its pan-African footprint and navigate an increasingly competitive banking landscape shaped by digital transformation, regulatory reforms and expanding regional operations.

The transition also reflects the growing influence of corporate governance reforms in Nigeria’s banking sector, where mandatory board succession planning has become an important feature of institutional stability and long-term leadership continuity.
