MainPower urges Enugu residents to observe electrical safety during rainy season

MAINPower Electricity Distribution Ltd. (MEDL) has advised residents of Enugu State to observe strict electrical safety measures during the rainy season to reduce the risk of electrocution, accidents and damage to property.

The company’s Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, gave the advisory on Monday following heavy rainfall, windstorms and flooding that affected parts of the state.

Ezeh urged residents to remain indoors during rainfall or seek safe shelter away from electricity infrastructure to minimise exposure to electrical hazards.

“Customers and residents should remain indoors or seek safe shelter during rainfall,” he said.

He warned against taking shelter beneath trees or standing close to electricity poles, power lines and other electrical installations during storms, noting that strong winds and heavy rains could bring down trees, electricity poles and overhead conductors.

According to him, fallen power lines and exposed electrical installations pose serious electrocution risks and should never be approached.

Ezeh also advised residents not to handle electrical appliances, switches, sockets or fittings with wet hands, stressing that moisture significantly increases the risk of electric shock.

He encouraged customers to ensure that electrical wiring and installations in homes and business premises are properly insulated and regularly maintained to prevent faults and avoidable accidents.

Parents and guardians, he added, should keep children away from electrical installations and other potentially hazardous locations during the rainy season.

To protect household appliances, Ezeh recommended unplugging sensitive electrical devices during severe thunderstorms to minimise damage from lightning-induced power surges.

He further urged customers to promptly report emergencies involving fallen electricity poles, snapped conductors, damaged transformers and other unsafe electrical installations requiring immediate attention.

Residents can report such incidents through the company’s emergency lines or by contacting the Quick Response Team via the Customer Call Centre for immediate assistance.

Ezeh reaffirmed MainPower’s commitment to ensuring safe and reliable electricity distribution throughout the rainy season and appealed to customers to cooperate by observing safety guidelines and promptly reporting faults to help prevent avoidable tragedies.
