Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to deploying its vast natural gas resources to drive Africa’s economic growth and contribute to global energy stability, with the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, describing gas as the cornerstone of the country’s development strategy.
Ojulari stated this on at the opening ceremony of the Nigeria International Energy Summit, NIES 2026, in Abuja.
Addressing industry leaders, policymakers and international stakeholders, the NNPC Ltd boss said Nigeria, as an emerging global energy powerhouse, bears a responsibility to utilise its abundant resources, particularly natural gas, to support Africa’s rise.
“Nigeria’s pathway to a prosperous future lies in our collective ability to leverage our resource abundance, especially as gas sits at the heart of our strategy. It is our bridge to a cleaner future, our engine for industrialisation, and our foundation for export-led growth,” Ojulari said.
He drew attention to what he described as Africa’s energy trilemma, noting that despite the continent’s vast energy endowment, it continues to struggle with accessibility, affordability and sustainability. According to him, more than 600 million Africans are still without access to electricity.
Ojulari stressed that Africa’s energy transition must reflect its unique realities, rather than copying models from other regions.
“With over 600 million Africans still lacking electricity, the continent’s priority cannot be a copy and paste. Ours must be a just, equitable, people-centred energy addition, one that lifts our people out of poverty, powers industries, supports agriculture, transforms transportation, and unleashes the creativity of Africa’s youth,” he stated.
He disclosed that Nigeria, with an estimated 37 billion barrels of crude oil and about 209 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, is well positioned to lead efforts to change Africa’s energy narrative, adding that NNPC Ltd is ready to play a central role in that transformation.
Ojulari also described NNPC Ltd as more than a commercial entity, saying the national oil company is increasingly positioning itself as an enabler of peace and prosperity through energy security and economic development.
On concrete steps being taken to enhance access to gas as a primary fuel for industrialisation and economic growth, the GCEO revealed that NNPC Ltd has launched a new Gas Masterplan. He added that the company is also advancing key strategic gas infrastructure projects across the country.
These include the Obiafu, Obrikom, Oben gas pipeline project, OB3, the Ajaokuta, Kaduna, Kano gas pipeline, AKK, and the expansion of the Escravos, Lagos Pipeline System, ELPS.
“These projects are more than pipelines, they are highways for economic opportunity,” Ojulari explained.
The Nigeria International Energy Summit serves as a major platform for dialogue on energy policy, investment and innovation, bringing together stakeholders from across the global energy value chain to shape the future of Africa’s energy landscape.
